Welcome to Marci Elena Perez's Portfolio

Marci Perez

Allow me to introduce myself.  I am Marci Elena Perez and this is my artwork.  For many years I have kept my work to myself as it is an extremely personal endeavor.  I have been commissioned for portraits and other such projects; however, sharing my artwork publicly has been a challenge since it leaves me feeling very exposed to the world.   Since I never expected my artwork to be hanging in the homes of others, as they now are, I confess that I was careless with the detail of my signature.  I recently had a name change which means that all my new artwork is signed Marci Perez.  It is perhaps interesting to note that my earliest work is signed in some form of Marci Morris or MEM.  And as I transitioned names, my signature changed to Marci Elena, or in some cases just Marci.  I hope you can forgive this inconsistency and see it as I do: a journey for finding my true self.   Please feel free to email me if you wish to make a purchase or simply want to leave a comment.

I’d love your feedback and do hope you find some pleasure in visiting my site.  Thank you. :)

-Charcoal Drawings-

My charcoal drawings are usually reserved for portraiture, but not always.  I have been drawing using many different techniques for over 25 years.  However, in the last decade I have discovered a technique that really seems to synchronize what I am seeing in my mind with what comes out on the paper.  First I darken my paper with a thick layer of charcoal, and then I draw by erasing away the charcoal until it forms the image that I want.  That being said, there are time when people request portraits of me and it is not based solely on my imagination.  For these situations, I feel it is very important to be accurate and will use gridlines to help make sure the portrait is as true as possible.  Either way, I love drawing.  Few things in life are as satisfying as watching your imagination manifest itself almost magically in front of you.

"Logic Isn't Everything"

2009
Charcoal on paper
14" x 17"

Sold

This piece was inspired by my love for a man which seemed completely illogical to pursue.   Spock, the embodiment of logic, is the subject of this work and, as you may notice, he is slightly smiling.  The message here was that we may pursue logic and even take on the appearance of such, however, in the end it is our heart which brings us joy.

The angel in this image represents a part of oneself which seems to have died.  Perhaps it is innocence or childhood dreams.  But here we find the claim that we are not lost souls and we must have faith that our angels will come to bring us peace.

-Fine Oil Paintings-

Oil painting is a new passion for me.  I use a wet on wet technique which gives me the freedom to let the paint fly.  I started out learning how to make traditional landscapes, but overtime discovered a delight for recreating the cosmos.  I am obsessed with storms, stars, sky, and clouds.  There must clearly be something in me screaming to get out.  When I paint, unlike when I draw, I feel completely free do be anywhere in the universe I want, even places that don’t exist.  I find that the more I paint the more my mind wants to escape even further.  Only time will tell where I will wonder to next.
